SHNL Candid Conversations

November 25 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Formerly called “60 Minutes of Inspiration”, “Candid Conversations” is a one-hour community inquiry into the harder topics women need to talk about and learn about, such as redefining success on our own terms, surviving death and cancer, and anti-racism.

The topic of our next Candid Conversations event will be: Women, Racism and Anti-Racism.

Why this conversation, and why now?

Courage is one of She Has No Limits’ core values. If we want to see real change in our workplaces, communities and society, women must be willing to lead the hard conversations. Within the SHNL community, that is what we practise.

Racism remains under-discussed, particularly among white women. We want to change that.

On Wednesday 25th November, SHNL’s founder Amanda Davie will share her own journey towards understanding and practising anti-racism, and how she came to meet her mentor, Janice Gittens. Together, Amanda and Janice will lead an honest conversation about women, racism and the path to becoming actively anti-racist.

Specific talking points will be:

  1. Two personal journeys and the place of convergence: Janice on arriving as a child in ‘the Motherland’ from the colonial Caribbean, and what that experience taught her; and Amanda on choosing as an adult to take the path of education and repair after a racist accusation – a path that led her to Janice.
  2. The long shadow of colonialism: how it still shapes the stories women are told, the media we consume and the way we see one another, and why racism can exist without racists.
  3. The invisible grind: the cumulative cost of everyday racism for women of colour, from constantly establishing credibility while having to remain composed and ‘nice’.
  4. From good intentions to anti-racist action: the importance of questioning our thinking, moving beyond well-intended white saviourism, and learning through discomfort.

Our hope is that this Candid Conversation will equip more women in our community with the confidence, knowledge, support and influence to start new and different conversations, and to play their part in addressing the injustices of our colonial past, which continue to cast long shadows over our families, teams, organisations and communities today.

A safe space to learn

This is a confidential, non-judgmental space. You’re welcome to ask any question, however uncertain you feel, so that you leave better equipped to champion racial justice and equity in your workplace, family and community.
